MAKING A HOUSE A HOME

Living in an apartment is hard. Not because it's small, but because it is so hard to personalize. Newer apartments lack character and that home feeling that I crave. Not only that, but they feel so temporary to me. I tell myself, "Meh, we're only living here for a year or two, why waste time decorating every nook & cranny." You can't paint the walls. All of the floors are carpet or laminate in that boring apartment beige. The cupboards are made of particle board. The list goes on and on.

And then I want to smack myself in the face. This is our home. We have a home. A home with a spectacular view of the West Virginia hills. A home that is warm. A home that has cupboards filled with food. A home that keeps us safe. Not all are so lucky. So then I temporarily stop my complaining. But eventually, without fail, I begin comparing our home to others' homes again.

I'm going to try very hard to stop this toxic cycle I've put myself in, and I started by really putting time and effort into making our house feel like a home. Keeping it clean. Putting up mementos that remind us of times past. Filling it with scents of homecooked meals. But mostly, telling my husband every day how much I appreciate him, our life, and the home we have.

We really are so so lucky.

  1. Beautiful post! I'm often like that too - it seems like life is too busy to appreciate what we have.

  2. I totally know what you mean. Me and my boy are currently also living in a very small apartment and I want it so bad to make it a "home". You can do it with simple, tiny things that makes everything better and nicer :).
    Loving the captures :).

  3. i remember that nesting urge. and i succumbed. and bought a bunch of shit to make my home cute and comfortable. and now, four years later, i just wanna purge all that crap. those things don't matter. like you said, it's about the moments that happen in that space. cherish those. and don't fret the small stuff.

    1. I feel that way right now! My husband is a pack-rat, but I've been forcing him to go through some of this boxes of college crap (books/shot glasses/games/aka junk) and he's not loving it. I know we'll feel better though once we just own the things we need. An unhealthy attachment to STUFF is just bad.

  5. You're growing up and making that transition from college to young adult life. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it sucks. We lived in apartments for 4 years before we owned our townhome. Sounds like you're doing the best you can at making your apt a home. Love your pics!

  7. obsessed with those blue mason jars, they're soo pretty! and i agree with you, it's hard to make an apartment a home sometimes (especially when you know you're only living here temporarily and keep dreaming of your forever home) but i love the feeling you get when you walk in the door when the apartment is clean and you've put some of your touches on it.

  8. Remember - it's not things that make a house a home, but the people in it! x

  9. Eden, thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving such a sweet comment! :)

My fiance and I have filled our apartment with knick knacks that help us identify this temporary space as home, but sometimes that can be overwhelming, too. When I clean I think to myself, "Oh my gosh, how will we ever pack all of this?!" It's a slippery slope, apartment living.

So glad you stopped by my blog, so I could stumble upon yours — what a pleasant surprise! xo

  10. I totally agree. When michael and i first moved in together, we didnt spend a lot of time with our apartment because we both knew we would be moving out of state eventually. Now im looking forward to investing time and money into making our apartment a real home.

  11. Great way to put things back in perspective. We live in an apartment as well, but we are able to paint which has made a big difference. While my friends are renovating their houses, I have to try and remember that I'll get there some day too.
